AT HOME
Be sure to keep the thermostat at 68 degrees. Close off rooms you're not going to use. Close off any crawl spaces and check the attic.
Get battery powered light sources and avoid using candles.
Keep the heat inside the house by covering the windows.
Drip water from faucets when the temperature is close to and below freezing. Open the cabinets under your sinks all day to keep the warm air flowing.
Be sure to keep yourself others and your pets warm with blankets, sweaters and extra clothes.
Make sure there's enough water and food for 2 to 3 days. There should be one gallon of water per person per day. Go with foods that are protein and fiber rich. Prepare some meals ahead of time.
Be sure to have a basic first aid kit on hand. Aspirin is a must have.
Check on any elderly or disabled neighbors, make sure they're prepared for cold weather.
Think about investing in a generator at your house.
Make sure meter and water valve boxes are closed. Cover or insulate any exposed pipes outside. Disconnect water and garden hoses and drain them. Cover outdoor faucets. Turn off any in-ground irrigation systems and drain those as well.
Keep your phone charged and think about getting a battery pack.
