While most of us were sound asleep at 12:50 a.m. on Sunday, November 10, dedicated first responders were on their way to the Lakewood Crossing Apartments on Parkwood Lane. Those responding included the Granbury Volunteer Fire Department, volunteer fire departments from North Hood County, Tolar, Indian Harbor and Station 70. Also responding were Sgt. Michael Holly, Officers Jesse Davis, Todd Sermarini, and Ty Gregg from the Granbury Police Department, a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper and Texas EMS team.

When crews arrived, flames were already visible on the second floor of the building. Granbury VFD On-Scene Commander, Captain Brad Snyder, learned from Granbury PD and DPS officers on-site that two-year-old Liam Keen was still inside on the second floor.

Captain Snyder immediately directed a team of firefighters to combat the flames while assigning Jonathan Head of North Hood County and Brian Serratelli of Granbury to perform the rescue.

Jonathan climbed a ladder to the second-floor window, where he broke through the glass and screen to enter. Inside, dense smoke reduced visibility to almost zero, and the building’s sprinkler system had flooded the floors with several inches of water.

Though Jonathan could hear Liam crying, he couldn’t see him. He searched but couldn’t find the child. Finally, he returned to the first room, following the sound of Liam’s cries, and miraculously located him.

By this time, smoke was billowing out of the broken window, creating a small pocket of clearer air. With Liam in his arms, Jonathan carried him to the window, where Brian was waiting on the ladder. Brian took Liam down to safety, where an ambulance and medical team were standing by.
